Working With AUs
What is an AU?
AU stands for "alternate universe": you take characters from a story and move them into a different setting while keeping who they are. The fun is in the contrast: a brooding warrior as a barista, sworn enemies as soulmates, a quiet character forced onto a stage. Same people, new world, new ways for them to collide.
Popular AU types
Some AU settings have become fandom staples because they reliably create chemistry:
- Coffee shop: low-stakes, slow-building, full of small daily moments.
- Soulmate: a built-in mark or tie that forces the question of fate.
- Royalty: power, duty, and forbidden closeness.
- Mafia: loyalty, danger, and trust that costs something.
- High school / college: first feelings and second chances.
AU vs. a random scenario
An AU changes the world your characters live in; a scenario just drops them into a situation inside the world they already have. If you want a single tense or funny moment for your existing cast, the Random Scenario Generator is the tool. If you want to rebuild their whole setting, you’re in the right place.
