What is a trope?

A trope is a familiar pattern readers recognise: "fake dating", "only one bed", "found family", "enemies to lovers". Tropes aren’t lazy; they’re shorthand. They set an expectation, and the fun is in how you meet it, subvert it, or pile three of them on top of each other.

Combine tropes for something fresh

A single trope is a starting point. Two tropes that don’t obviously belong together are a story. "Fake dating" plus "there was only one bed" plus "enemies to lovers" writes half its own outline. Generate a handful, then pick the two that make you grin and figure out how they share a plot.
