Example Prompts

A focus on personality and flaws for a fantasy character.

Personality + Flaws

Genre: Fantasy · Focus: Personality, Flaws

Personality: Warm to strangers, guarded with anyone who stays. Tells jokes to end conversations she doesn’t want to have. Flaws: Confuses control with safety; plans for every outcome and panics when she can’t. Would rather be needed than known.

Backstory Hooks

Focus: Backstory

• Raised by someone who wasn’t supposed to keep them, and never learned why. • Owes a debt to a person they can no longer find. • Left home over something small that became the official reason for something large.

Building a Character From Prompts

How to use the focus options

The focus checkboxes decide what kind of prompt you get. Pick one when you’re stuck on a single part (just flaws, or just appearance) and pick several when you want a fuller picture. Each focus answers a different question about your character:

  • Personality: how do they act when no one’s steering them?
  • Backstory hooks: what happened before page one?
  • Appearance: what do you notice first, and what do you notice last?
  • Motivations: what do they want badly enough to risk something?
  • Flaws: where do they get in their own way?
  • Concept: the one-line pitch that makes them worth writing.

OC creation tips

The fastest way to make a flat character interesting is to give them a contradiction: a kind person who lies, a brave one who avoids one specific thing. Start with a flaw and a want that pull against each other, and the rest tends to follow. Use these prompts as questions to answer, not rules to obey; the ones you push back on are usually the ones worth keeping.

Prompts vs. a finished character

This tool is for building a character yourself, one idea at a time. If you want the whole thing handed to you (a named character with a full profile in one click), use the OC Generator. Many people bounce between the two: generate a full OC, then come here for prompts to deepen the parts that interest them.
