Example Prompts

Here is the kind of thing the generator produces for a single pairing.

Fluff

Pairing: Nova & Kit · Tone: Fluff

1. Kit falls asleep mid-sentence on the couch, and Nova spends ten minutes deciding whether moving the blanket is worth waking them. 2. They argue, with full seriousness, over the correct way to fold a fitted sheet, and neither will admit it ended in a kiss. 3. Nova learns Kit’s coffee order by heart and pretends it was a lucky guess.

Angst

Pairing: Nova & Kit · Tone: Angst

1. Kit keeps a voicemail from Nova they can’t bring themselves to delete or to play. 2. Nova says "I’m fine" one too many times, and Kit finally stops believing it. 3. They run into each other a year after the fallout, and the worst part is how polite they both are.

Use cases

Use Cases

Ship prompts are useful any time you need a place to start.

Fanfic Starters

Skip the blank page. Grab a prompt and turn it into a one-shot or a multi-chapter fic.

Roleplay Seeds

Drop a prompt into a roleplay thread or DM to kick off a scene with your partner.

Ship Asks & Memes

Use prompts as ask-game answers or to fill a fluff/angst prompt list on Tumblr.

Beat Writer’s Block

Stuck on what happens next? A fresh prompt can shake a stalled fic loose.

Writing With OTP Prompts

What makes a good ship prompt

A good OTP prompt gives you a situation, not a whole plot. It points at a moment with some tension or warmth in it and trusts you to fill in the rest. "They get caught in the rain" is a setting; "they share one umbrella and neither mentions how close that means standing" is a prompt.

The tone you pick changes everything. The same two characters trapped in an elevator read as fluff, angst, or slow burn depending on what you ask for, so try the same pairing across a few tones and keep whichever sparks something.

Fluff, angst, hurt/comfort, and slow burn

These are the tones fic writers reach for most, and each one asks a different question of your pairing:

  • Fluff: what do they look like when nothing is wrong?
  • Angst: what hurts, and who caused it?
  • Hurt/comfort: one of them is down, so how does the other show up?
  • Slow burn: what keeps them from just saying it?

Ship prompts vs. incorrect quotes vs. scenarios

If you want funny out-of-character one-liners between characters, the Incorrect Quotes Generator is the better fit. If you want a situation for a group that isn’t about romance, try the Random Scenario Generator. This tool stays focused on the relationship: two people, one moment, and whatever is unspoken between them.
